Vice President Kashim Shettima

Vice President Kashim Shettima has emphasized the urgent need for Nigeria to eliminate fuel subsidy to avoid severe repercussions for the country. He made this statement during a press briefing at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, shortly after resuming office.

Shettima’s remarks followed President Bola Tinubu’s declaration on Monday that fuel subsidy had been abolished. The vice president acknowledged that the administration anticipated strong opposition from those benefiting from the subsidy scheme, but he assured that the issue would be squarely addressed.

According to Shettima, in 2022 alone, the Nigerian government spent $10 billion on subsidizing the lavish lifestyles of the privileged class, with only a small portion of the population benefiting significantly. He stressed that the consequences of maintaining this masquerade were dire. While acknowledging the fierce opposition expected from beneficiaries of the oil subsidy scam, Shettima expressed confidence in the determination and conviction of President Tinubu to tackle the issue head-on. He emphasized the need for prompt action, stating that the sooner the subsidy was addressed, and the better.

Regarding exchange rates, the vice president disclosed plans to consolidate multiple exchange rates into a single unified system. He referred to this as another major challenge that needed to be tackled.

Shettima emphasized the importance of unity and loyalty to President Tinubu, as he is the president and commander-in-chief of the armed forces. He expressed his longstanding relationship and close interaction with Tinubu, assuring the public that they would work harmoniously as a team for the greater good of the nation.

Speaking about his vision, Shettima quoted the late John F. Kennedy, stating that this generation has a responsibility to fulfill its destiny. He expressed his belief that President Tinubu, with his leadership and vision, would redefine modern governance and work towards a Nigeria that all black people worldwide could be proud of. Shettima affirmed his commitment to supporting Tinubu and providing the necessary loyalty to achieve the Nigerian dream.

In conclusion, Shettima humbly acknowledged the power entrusted to him and emphasized his dedication to improving the lives of ordinary citizens. He expressed confidence that President Tinubu possesses the necessary qualities, skills, temperament, and commitment to lead the nation to new heights, promising his unwavering support in realizing this vision.
